In 2006, Julie and I were given the opportunity to participate in a mission trip to Peru. At this point in our lives, we were struggling with infertility, and the opportunity to serve in an orphanage changed our lives in ways unimaginable. When we returned home, we decided that we should commit to serving through short-term missions trips every other year in lieu of a vacation. God, however, had other plans, blessing us with the girls and allowing our time and energy to be focused on them during the past four years.
As 2010 arrived, we both knew that it was time to consider serving on another mission trip. We had been praying for direction as to “when” and “where” we should journey, when I was approached about serving in Eleuthera. This small island in the Bahamas is just over 1 mile wide and 110 miles long. It is inhabited by the native Bahamians along with Haitians that have immigrated to the island. Ju and I both knew that God was calling us to that particular place. We will be serving on a construction team; we will be working on a cistern for drinking water, septic lines, and housing needs for the locals and missionaries with whom we will be working. We leave May 15th and will return on the 22nd.
We are extremely excited to be able to serve on this trip, but the cost is $2400. Though some of the team members are sending support letters to family and friends, we didn’t feel led in that direction. We decided to post this blog, letting you know of our journey and allowing you the opportunity to support this financially. Many of you already donate to “missions”; this would be a chance for you to know exactly what cause those donations are supporting. (If you would like to offer financial support, there is information below as to how to do so.)
We would greatly appreciate your prayers as we leave on this mission. Below are some specific prayer requests:
*Travel safety as we leave the girls for a week and journey to another country
*That the interaction we have while working alongside the Bohemians and Haitians will reveal God and His glory.
*That we will be used to diffuse some of the hostility amongst the Bahamians and Haitians.
*That there will be no accidents as we work and that our construction will be productive and efficient.
Thank you again for your prayers and support. We will be updating the blog with pictures and stories of God’s work in Eleuthera. You can read more on Grace missions here.
